Project description

C4ES produced a Baseline Study for this project, which is funded by Global Environment Facility/Least Developed Countries Fund. The project will reduce the vulnerability of Madagascar’s coastal zone to climate variability and change, through institutional capacity building, coastal protection and integration of climate change into policy and planning. The Baseline Study included field-based assessments of land use and vegetation cover, as well as assessments of coastal infrastructure such as sea walls and groynes. Surveys were designed to collect social data at national, sub-national and local levels to measure vulnerability to climate change. The results of the assessments and surveys will be used to revise the original monitoring and evaluation plans, including indicators and targets.

Project description

C4ES is developing a project identification form for this multi-focal area project to be funded by the GEF Trust Fund. The project will promote sustainable forest management and enhance rural livelihoods through forest landscape restoration, improved agroforestry practices and integrated land-use planning in Sri Lanka.

It will achieve this by: i) enhancing the contributions of trees-outside-forests to food security, income, and biological diversity; ii) building national capacity for forest landscape restoration; iii) establishing incentive mechanisms to enhance the contribution of forest ecosystem services to local livelihoods; iv) reducing pressures on natural forests through integrated land-use planning at landscape level; and v) enhancing the national knowledge base for sustainable land management.
