C4ES undertook a field-mapping exercise to identify potential areas for spekboom (Portulacaria afra) restoration in the Calitzdorp area of the Klein Karoo. This assessment: i) determined the historical and current extent of spekboom vegetation types within the area; ii) mapped restoration potential – i.e. currently degraded areas that were historically spekboom-rich vegetation types – at a scale of 1:15,000 within the domain; iii) gauged the willingness of land owners and land users to participate in restoration activities; and iv) developed restoration protocols and standard operating procedures to guide restoration activities within the Calitzdorp planning domain.
