C4 are delivering a project to enhance the climate resilience and sustainability of Mongolia’s boreal forests — part of the world’s largest terrestrial carbon sink — which are being degraded by climate change impacts and unsustainable use.

It supports the Government of Mongolia’s Vision 2050 and One Billion Tree Initiative by expanding sustainable forest management (SFM), restoring degraded forest ecosystems, and developing a self-financing green economy for forest communities.

Implementation will target three provinces — Khuvsgul, Uvurkhangai and Zavkhan — and deliver mitigation and adaptation co-benefits through:

• Establishing policy and institutional frameworks for SFM.
• Promoting community-based forest restoration, agroforestry and fire management.
• Developing market mechanisms such as payment for ecosystem services and a Green Economy Business Incubator for micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises.

Over 20 years, the project is projected to avoid ~21 million tCO₂e of emissions and directly benefit more than 320,000 people (~10 % of Mongolia’s population) through improved ecosystem services, livelihoods, and water security. UNEP will serve as the Accredited Entity and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism as the Executing Entity, working closely with the National Forest Agency and local stakeholders to implement the initiative effectively.
