When people ask me what differentiates someone who has worked in Mali from someone who hasn’t, my answer is this: Mali is not an easy country to work in. There is a full-scale war going on. Every day is different. Every day brings its own challenges. The infrastructure is difficult — in some places there are no roads at all. Malaria is a daily reality. You need to accept those risks and keep moving.

The people who can do that are the people who already know how to get through hard times. Not because they learned it in Mali, but because they came in already knowing how to work around problems, how to adapt when things don’t go to plan, how to keep delivering when the conditions are far from ideal.

Someone coming from a well-structured environment where infrastructure is reliable and systems run smoothly will struggle in Mali. Not because they lack technical skill, but because they have never had to operate without those systems. When the road disappears, when the plan changes overnight, when every day looks different from the one before — that requires a different kind of experience. It requires someone who is already comfortable working through uncertainty.
